    Species Description - Stem 2–8 dm, forked above, hairy when young; lvs sessile, thin, oblong or ovate-oblong, 4–10 cm, thinly hairy beneath, commonly abruptly acuminate; fls in subsessile clusters of 1–3 ending the branches, the pedicels 6–15 mm; tep white, spotted with purple, lance-ovate, 15–25 × 4.5–7 mm; stamens nearly as long as the tep, the filaments 13–18 mm; ovary obpyriform or obconic, stramineous, covered with stellate-glandular hairs; ovules horizontal, 2–4 per locule; fr 3- lobed, yellow, densely hairy; 2n=12. Rich mt. woods; irregularly from nw. Ga. and ne. Ala. to w. N.C., e. Tenn., w. Md., e. Ky., and s. O.; disjunct in s. Mich. May (D. cahnae; D. schaffneri; Prosartes m.)
