Description
Species Description - Stem stout, 6–12 dm, smooth; lvs in 3–8 whorls of 4–8, lanceolate, lance-oblong, or narrowly elliptic, the larger to 11 cm, 1–2.5 cm wide, tapering to an acute or obtuse tip, several-nerved; fls 1–8, nodding, narrowly bell-shaped; tep oblong-spatulate, slightly outcurved at the tip, 4–6 cm, deep red outside, lighter red within, becoming yellow in the throat, marked with numerous purple spots; anthers not readily visible in side-view; fr 3–5 cm; 2n=24. Rich moist woods in the higher mts. of Va., N.C., and Tenn. June, July.
