Description
Species Description - Stems erect, 5–25 dm, from tunicated bulbs with conspicuous fibrous coats; leaves mostly crowded near the base, linear, 2–5 dm × 4–12 mm, the upper reduced or bract-like; panicle pyramidal, 1–4 dm, with rather few spreading or ascending branches naked toward the base and bearing a dense raceme above; bracts ovate, 2 mm; pedicels 5–12 mm; fls white or ochroleucous or chloroleucous, the lower in each raceme fertile, the upper usually at least functionally staminate; tep ovate-elliptic, 3–5 mm, with an inconspicuous small yellow gland at base, sometimes basally adnate to the ovary-base; fr ovoid, 3-lobed, 1 cm. Bogs and wet woods on the coastal plain; s. N.Y. to Ga. and La.; also in the mts. from Va. to Ky., N.C., and Tenn. July, Aug. (Oceanoros l.)
