Psychotria crocea Sw. Prodr. Veg. Ind. Occ. 44. 1788.
Among the yellow- and orange-red-flowered species of Palicourea, the Palicourea crocea assemblage is a most variable and puzzling one which has been variously treated by a number of authors as comprising distinct species or lumped together as one variable taxon. In Martius’s Flora Brasiliensis Müller-Argoviensis has attempted to maintain many of the taxa in this group as separate species. Bremekamp, on the other hand, was unable to maintain several taxa, combining them, so far as the Suriname flora was concerned, into one species. Like Bremekamp, I have been unable to separate the many taxa as recognized by M.-Argoviensis. A critical review of the P. crocea reveals, nevertheless, that certain variations exist within this widely distributed taxon and that they may be recognized as infraspecific categories.
