Palicourea nicotianaefolia of many authors, not Ch. & Schl.
This species has often been confused by authors with P. nicotianaefolia Ch. & Schl., which is another taxon from southern Brazil. Müller-Argoviensis (Mart. Fl. Bras. 6(5): 236. 1881) used Psychotria tabacifolia to replace the name Palicourea nicotianaefolia Cham. & Schl., which, when transferred to Psychotria, is pre-empted by Psychotria nicotianaefolia Mart. & Gal., a species of Mexico. However, Palicourea nicotianaefolia is the earliest legitimate name for the southern Brazilian taxon when maintained in Palicourea, as here considered by me, and Psychotria tabacifolia becomes a superfluous name and synonym for it.
