Discussion:

Type. Peninsula de Paria, Cerro de Humo, bosque húmedo nublado, sobre la fila angosta al norte, entre la cumbre y Cerro La Pavita, Estado Sucre, Venezuela, alt 1250-1273 m, 4 Mar 1966, subshrub 2.5 m tall with subherbaceous stem; corolla white; calyx and rachis pale green in flower, maroon in fruit; leaves chartaceous, Julian A. Steyermark 95019 (holotype VEN).

Paratype. VENEZUELA. Sucre: Peninsula de Paria, Cerro Patao, norte de Puerto de Hierro, noreste de Guiria, selva nublada en la cumbre plana, alt 1020 m, 19 Jul 1962, Steyermark & Agostini 91038.

This taxon with its umbellately disposed inflorescence resembles members of the group to which P. bahiensis DC. belongs, but the fruit is not didymous with a prominent constriction separating the pyrenes as in that group, and the pyrenes are faintly ridged, whereas in the P. bahiensis group the pyrenes are dorsally smooth or nearly so.
