Type. In sylvis umbrosis flum. Uaupes ad Panure, Amazonas, Brazil, Jan 1853, Spruce 2871.

This taxon differs from P. loretensis Standl. in the pubescent calyx and hypanthium, fewer inflorescence axes, fewer lateral nerves of the leaf blades, strongly hirtellous peduncle, longer stipular teeth, and fewer flowers on shorter ultimate forks, the flowers not scattered along the length of the ultimate axes but crowded at the ends. From P. cincta Standl. it differs in the glabrous outer surface of the corolla, prominently developed calyx lobes, fewer axes of the inflorescence, and minutely reticulate, impressed or subelevated tertiary venation on the lower side of the leaf blade.
