Discussion:

Declieuxia chiococcoides var guyanensis Muell.-Arg., Mart. FI. Bras. 6(5): 442. 1881.

Type. In savanna prope Pirara, British Guiana, Rich. Schomburgk 663.

In this variety the stem and inflorescence branches are usually densely minutely puberulous, the inflorescence bracts hispidulous-ciliate, the leaves similar in shape to those of var fruticosa, but pubescent, and varying from oblong-elliptic to ovate-lanceolate and 1.5-4 × 0.7-1.6 cm. The fruits vary from glabrous to moderately papillate-villosulous. The calyx lobes are glabrous on the Schomburgk 723 specimen and villosulous on the Colombian material of Shiefer 715. The Steyermark 88494 specimen has glabrous fruit as in the Schomburgk 723 collection, but has densely puberulous corolla, bracts, and calyx lobes as in the Colombian specimen. The leaves of the Steyermark 88494 material are narrower than in the other specimens cited, and less pubescent as a whole, although showing an hirtellous-pubescent midrib and puberulous stems.

The several other variations treated by Müller-Argoviensis under D. chiococcoides occur mainly in southern and central Brazil, and are excluded from consideration in the present work.
