This smaller-leaved variation of the typical variety has small leaves similar to those of R. parvifolia Lam., differing from the latter in the longer and stouter spines 6-22 mm long, more leafy lateral branches with longer internodes, and in the corolla lobes as long as or longer than the tube. Fruits in this variation are generally 6-10, rarely up to 13-seeded.
