Randia mitis L., Sp. Pl. 1192. 1753.
Gardenia randia var mitis (L.) Sw., Fl. Ind. Occ. 1: 528. 1797.
Randia latifolia Lam. var mitis (L.) DC., Prodr. 4: 385. 1830.
Randia aculeata var mitis (L.) Griseb., Fl. Br. W. Ind. 318. 1861.
Linnaeus described two species (Randia mitis and R. aculeata) in his Species Plantarum, p. 1192. 1753, R. mitis appearing first in order of publication. Standley used the name R. aculeata (Field Mus. Publ. Bot. 7: 59. 1930), stating that “De Candolle in uniting the two Linnaean species employed the name R. aculeata, which has been used by most subsequent authors.” Actually, de Candolle (Prodr. 4: 385. 1830) did not unite the two as the same taxon, but placed R. mitis L. as a variety “ß mitis” under R. latifolia Lam., the latter species being used as the legitimate name with R. aculeata placed in synonymy.
