Basanacantha calycina (Cham.) Schum., Mart. Fl. Bras. 6(6): 375. 1889.

Type. Nazaré, Bahia, Brazil, Sellow 163.

It is questionable whether the Venezuelan, Colombian, and Ecuadorean material above cited is actually conspecific with the material from southern and eastern Brazil. The calyx lobes of the non-Brazilian specimens are mainly linear to lanceolate, often or mainly broadest at the base, sometimes broadest at the middle, and narrowing to the apex, whereas in the Sellow and Mexia 5313 Brazilian specimens, the calyx lobes are spathulate or oblanceolate and rounded or obtuse or abruptly mucronate at the apex, but conspicuously broadest at the apex. The pedicels of the staminate flowers in the Brazilian specimens are densely pubescent, agreeing in this respect with the specimens from Venezuela and Colombia.
