Description:Latin Diagnosis - A var erythroxylon laminis foliorum subtus axillis barbellatis exceptis glabris recedit; laminis late obovatis vel ovatis vel late rhomboideo-ellipticis 13-30 × 7-22 cm basi cordatis vel subcordatis, nervis lateralibus utroque latere 15-20; petiolis 1.2-4 cm longis glabris vel glabratis; capsulis globosis 3.5-4.2 × 3.5-4 cm; seminibus elliptico-oblongis vel falcato-ellipticis 2.5-3 × 1-1.2 cm.

Discussion:

Type. Selva subtropical húmeda, San Juan Bautista, 40 km ESE of Tabay, Estado Mérida, Venezuela, alt 1000 m, 21 Jul 1953, E. L. Little, Jr. 15354 (holotype NY).

The varieties of Simira erythroxylon, other than the var erythroxylon, are known only in fruiting condition. It is possible that flowering material of future collections may reveal other differences of subspecific or specific importance. At present, however, they may be differentiated vegetatively only.
