Discussion:

Cinchona lambertiana A. Br. ex Mart., Reise Bras. 3: 1286. 1831.

Ladenbergia schomburgkii Klotzsch in Hayne, Arzneigew. 14: sub pl. 15. 1846.

Cascarilla lambertiana Wedd., Hist. Quinquin. 85. 1849.

Type. In sylvis ad Araracoara, prov. Rio Negro, Amazonas, Colombia, Martius s n (M).

Although the type collection of Martius from Araracoara is often cited as from “Brasilia,” the locality is in Colombia along the Río Caquetá along the northern boundary of the Department Amazonas at the southeastern limit with Department Caquetá, not too far east of the settlement of Angostura. Apparently, this collection represents the southwestern limit for the species, since the remainder of the distribution, judging by herbarium material examined, is from southern Venezuela, British Guiana, and Estado Amazonas in northwesternmost Brazil near the Colombian border.

The capsules in this taxon vary from usually 3-7 cm long, but in the type collection of Cascarilla lambertiana (Martius from Araracoara) the capsules are small and only 2.5-3 cm long. The corollas vary from usually 25-32 mm in length, but in the type specimen of Cascarilla schomburgkii from Roraima the corolla measures only 20 mm long and represents the minimum reduction in size. However, the Schomburgk specimen from K shows the characteristic glabrous pale lower side of the leaf blades with glabrous midrib and lateral nerves, cordate base, ovate shape, densely strigillose hypanthium, eglandular calyx tube moderately strigillose without and glabrous within, and ovate subacute calyx lobes moderately puberulous without, matching in these respects the characters of Ladenbergia lambertiana.

Apparently no corolla is known in the type collection of Cascarilla lambertiana, and, although the persistent calyces on the capsules of the type collection are too old to be effectively diagnostic, some sparse short appressed hairs may be observed on one or two of the outer part of the calyx lobes and is of the type of strigillose pubescence seen on other specimens conspecific with this taxon. The Martius specimen likewise shows the leaf blades glabrous and pale beneath with completely glabrous midrib and lateral nerves, the blades are broadly oblong to ovate-elliptic, with the larger blades 12-13.5 × 5.5 cm and rounded to subcordate at the base, while the younger smaller ones have rounded to obtuse leaf bases. Since the characters of glabrous lower leaf surface, together with other characters noted, prove the Martius collection to be conspecific with all the other material passing as Ladenbergia lambertiana, it is thus interpreted here.
