The latest treatment of the genus was published by Wernham [Jour. Bot. 57 (Suppl.): 1-44. 1918], in which 81 species were recognized, of which 34 were described for the first time. At the present time Dr. In-Cho Chung is revising the genus [Phytologia 15(4): 272-288. 1967; 17(5): 353-366. 1968].
The following account comprises those taxa occurring in Venezuela, the Guayana Highland, and the Guianas. All but one of these taxa fall within the section Lygistum as treated by K. Schumann in Flora Brasiliensis 6(6): 167. 1889, and only one species, M. alba (Aubl.) Wernh., has, up to the present time, been found in the Guayana Highland. Twelve of the 18 taxa treated here are restricted in their distribution to sectors of the Venezuelan Andes and Coastal Cordillera.
