Discussion:

Type. S. S. Tillett, C. L. Tillett & R. Boyan 45084 (holotype NY, unicate), collected in scrub forest on shoulder of east flank of Mt. Ayanganna, British Guiana, elev 1418-1525 m, 10 Aug 1960. “Small herb, locally common; leaves light green, rugose; rachis of inflorescence and calyx reddish; corolla white with slight pink shading towards margin without; anthers pale yellow.”

The general facies of Ochthephilus is like that of the pubescent species of Behuria. That Brazilian genus, however, differs in the 4-celled ovaries and the oblong anthers without ventral auricles on the unprolonged connectives. Most of the species of Behuria have 6-merous flowers and (always?) simple calyx lobes without projecting teeth. No other genus of New World melastomes is at all suggestive of Ochthephilus. Pachyloma might be considered, but in it the stamen connective, with the dorsal appendage at or above the filament insertion and the ventral lobes at the filament insertion, is really quite different (as are the 4-celled ovary and quite short calyx).
