  • Discussion

Marila is a modest, well-marked genus of wide distribution. Some 16 taxa are commonly attributed to it, two species from Mexico and Central America, two species from the West Indies, and the remainder of tropical South America with the principal center cordilleran and Pacific. Several varieties have been recognized.

Wawra (Mart. Fl. Bras. 12(1): 267. 1886) placed the genus Marila in the Ternstroemiaceae within the tribe Bonnetieae. I concur in this association of the genus with the Bonnetieae. There has been no contemporary evaluation of the genus.
