Monographs Details: Archytaea triflora Mart.
Authority: Maguire, Bassett. 1972. The botany of the Guayana Highland--part IX. Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 23: 1-832.
Description:Distribution and Ecology - Distribution. Habitat in Brasilia ad fluvium Tapura prope cataractas Araracoara, Provinciae Rio Negro, Iter Brasil, Martius 3163 (type M, 3 sheets NY). A search for A. triflora in the type locality by the writer failed to locate additional plants of the species.
There are before me four specimens of Archytaea triflora Mart., made available by Dr. H. Merxmüller, Director of the Botanische Staatssammlung, all annotated by Wawra, and probably all representing Martius’ number 3163 [not 3165 as ascribed by Wawra (Mart. Fl. Bras. 12(1): 329. 1886.)].
A faithful delineation of these specimens showing broad leaves and ample bracteoles is reproduced in Martius’ Genera et Species Plantarum, tab. 73. 1826.
An apprasial of these specimens, a privilege that Kobuski did not have, confirms his assumption of the close affinity of A. multiflora with A. triflora. Despite this verified close consanguinity, I too shall refrain from placing the widespread later A. multiflora under A. triflora in any subordinate rank. Nothing further is known about the variability of the latter, or further concerning its geography.
