Discussion:

Type. Not designated.

Iriartea ventricosa is rather widespread in the western part of the Amazon Basin towards the Andes and probably throughout the Andes to the Pacific Coast so that its area extends from Venezuela and Brazil to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Further investigation will probably show that most or even all the species described in the genus Iriartea s. str. represent a single species only, which makes a name-change necessary: in that case I. deltoidea becomes the correct name.
