Discussion
Type. Not designated.
The distribution known to date makes the occurrence of Oenocarpus distichus in the Guayana Highland most questionable. However, a specimen from Venezuela, Edo Bolivar, Ptari tepui, in dense forest along Rio Karuai, alt 1220-1375 m,, Steyermark 60591, was attributed to this species. Rather surprisingly the detailed fieldnotes on the label do not mention the distichous leaves and, since such a striking feature hardly can be overlooked, this may be an indication for misidentification. The specimen preserved in F, consisting of numerous leaf-fragments and an inflorescence with female flowers after anthesis, did not enable the present author to identify it with certainty. The specimen possibly belongs to O. bacaba.
