Description:Distribution and Ecology - Distribution. Guiana shield and the eastern part of the Amazon Basin; occasional and unfrequent in usually not inundated poorly drained places at lower elevations up to about 600 m altitude. GUYANA. Upper Mazaruni River basin, Kamarang River, alt ca 550 m, Tillett & Tillett 45713 (NY).

Geonoma poiteauana is essentially a lowland species which only reaches elevations of about 600 m. It has been collected at about 250 m altitude at base of Cerro Duida, VENEZUELA, Tate 394 (NY), and at the foot of the Tafelberg, SURINAME, Maguire 24117 (NY, U). The Tate specimen was described as a new species G. chaunostachys Burret but cannot be separated and is conspecific with G. poiteauana.
