  • Discussion

    Rhynchosopra viridi-lutea C. B. Clarke, Kew Bull. Add. Ser. 8: 36. 1908. Syntype. British Guiana, Parker s n (K!, lectotype); Brazil, Lower Amazon, Prainha, Trail 1202 (K!).

Rhynchospora squamulosa Kükenthal in Fedde, Repert. Sp. Nov. 23: 201. 1926. Type. Cuba, Isla de Pinos, Ekman 12429 (S !). Syn nov.

Type. Hassler 8255 (K, holotype; isotypes in G, NY) from Funnen Opa, Paraguay.

After a careful comparison between the Cuban specimens and continental South American ones, I was unable to distinguish R. squamulosa and R. viridilutea from R. hassleri. The inflorescences in R. hassleri show a wide range of variation from a single terminal head to large corymbs with eight to 15 elongated rays at two upper nodes of the culm. Cuban R. squamulosa, known only by the type collection, is completely included within the variation range of South American R. hassleri. The difference in the achene shape, oblong vs elliptic, as mentioned by Kükenthal, was not recognizable in my observation.
