Discussion
The only other Guiana collection of this poorly represented species is Rusby & Squires 24 from the lower Orinoco. C. spinescens is remarkable not only because of its strong climbing habit (to 15m), stipular spines, and 1 m long panicles, but also for the fruit which measures up to 60 cm long, a dimension unknown outside of section Fistula. Extra-Guiana records of this species are from Guayana and Amazonia, in the latter case not further east than the Para-Amazonas boundary.
