Discussion
A large shrub or small tree, often ascending as a liana to 10 m or more. The dark glossy leaves and large orange flowers make this one of the most attractive plants in the genus. The yellow-brown fruit dehisces tardily by putrefaction. This species is most commonly met with on white sand in British Guiana, but is known from Suriname westward to Colombia and south into Amazonas, Brazil. The cited collection is a first report for Venezuelan Guiana.
