Discussion
Bentham distinguished this species from the Peruvian B. tarapotensis Benth. mainly by foliar and floral dimensions and by geographical disjunction. The present collection is more readily referred to B. breviloba, although there is little satisfaction in this reference for indeed there is now even less to distinguish the two species. With more material from the mountains of Guiana it may become necessary to merge them. The very similar B. a?nplifolia Ducke, described from Ducke 1594 (Brazil. Amazonas: Tobatinga) is distinguished by its unarmed, glabrous stems.
