Discussion:

This is a variable species and is distinguished from the B. breviloba complex by the persistent recurved thorns and smaller leaves. The present collection shows no marked deviation in character from Pittier 12194 (Edo. Carabobo) or Wurdack &Wright 400 (Edo. Bolivar, east of Upata toward Cerro Paja) . The cited collection is a new record for Guiana.
