    Distribution and Ecology - VENEZUELA. Bolivar: Mt. Roraima, summit, 2646 m alt., McConnell & Quelch 696 (type); same locality, Ule s.n.; 2560-2620 m alt., on southwest-facing portion of sandstone ledge just below summit, from beginning of summit vegetation to summit, on rocks, leaves erect, coriaceous, dull dark green above and dufl purple beneath, sepals and petals dark brick-red with a yellow center around the column, fruit wine-purple, September 27, 1944, J. A. Steyermark 58780; Cerro Guaiquinima, Rio Paragua, 1800 m alt., in woodland areas 1 km east of Cumbre Camp, common epiphyte, flowers yellowish, December 26, 1951, B. Maguire 32789; same locality and altitude, in trees of woodland island in savanna 1 km south of Cumbre Camp, common epiphyte, flowers yellowish white, December 29, 1951, Maguire 32810; same locality, 1650 m alt., in dense "moss" forest below west escarpment, frequent epiphyte, flowers yellowish white, December 31, 1951, Maguire 32859; Ilu-tepui, Gran Sabana, 2500-2600 m alt., occasional epiphyte in thick low bushes on upper slopes between "North Peak" and "Central Plateau," flowers whitish, March 15, 1952, Maguire 33432; Chimantd Massif, 1300 m alt., northwestern part of Abdcapa-tepui, on forested slopes adjacent to quebrada, in vicinity of Camp 3, epiphyte on 75188, leaves dark purple, subterete, 5 mm wide, sulcate in center, bud dull green and lavender, April 20, 1953, J. A. Steyermark 75196 (no flower seen); 2000-2150 m alt., in lower mixed Bonnetia forest above southeast-facing upper shoulder on slope leading to summit of Apdcara-tepui, on trunk, leaves coriaceous, magenta or olive-green, sulcate above, June 20, 1953, Steyermark 75817 (flowers poor); 2450-2500 m alt., east-central portion of summit of Apdcara-tepui, on rock, leaves coriaceous, purple, capsule wine-purple, June 21-22, 1953, Steyermark 75938 (no flowers). The last four Steyermark collections had no good flower, so the determination is uncertain.
