Discussion
Although Xylobotryum andinum Patouillard, the type species of the genus, is usually considered to have unitunicate asci and to be a Pyrenomycete (Rossman, 1976), we have observed fissitunicate dehiscence in the species (New Zealand, PDD 44303) and therefore refer the genus to the Pleosporales. Xylobotryum andinum and X. portentosum (Montagne) Patouillard, which differ in their gross morphology, are often found intermingled, leading us to suspect that there is only a single species.
