Description
Species Description - Tufted, 5–10 dm; sheaths glabrous to scaberulous; ligule triangular, 2–5+ mm; larger blades 2–3 dm × 2–4 mm; panicle ample and open, divergently branched, usually a third to half as long as the entire shoot; spikelets purple; glumes lance- ovate, tapering to a slender tip or short awn, subequal or somewhat unequal; lemma slender, fusiform, 2.5–5 mm. W.I., e. Mex., and se. U.S., n. to Okla., e. Kans., and s. Ind., and in the Atlantic coastal states to Mass. Three vars., 2 in our range.
