  • Description

Genus Description - The specimens cited below are those reported by Amshoff (Fl. Suriname 3(2): 99. 1951) under the name of Plinia pinnata. So few specimens of this genus are known from the Guianas that it seems impossible at the present time to name them correctly. They all bear a strong resemblance to P pinnata, but until the group can be revised with the aid of additional material it seems preferable to treat them as a local population distinct from the West Indian one. In the fruiting plant cited below, the fruit is quite different from that of P pinnata; it is not ridged, about 1 cm in diam, rather thickly appressed-pubescent with short silky hairs, described by the collector as "orange, with one subglobose seed."
