Discussion
In the Flora of Peru (Field :\lus. Publ. Bot. 13(4): 716. 1958), having seen the type of E. nigra in 1954, I rather hesitantly took up this name for certain specimens from the upper Amazon vahey. In 1966 I was able to study for a second time the type of Eugenia nigra, and I can now report with a certain degree of embarrassment that the specimens in question represent a species of Mouriri (Melastomataceae) not otherwise found among the Martius collections at Munich. The somewhat swollen leaf-bases, the ringlike scars at the smaller nodes, the characteristicahy pebbled leafsurfaces and the minute ringlike or porelike markings on the lower leaf-surface are all identifying marks of Mouriri, but are not Myrtaceous.
