Discussion:

This plant, which ranges from Suriname to Maranhao, is vegetatively almost indistinguishable from the following variety, which is known only from the upper Amazon basin. The species is a distinctive one, with rather narrow lustrous and coriaceous veiny leaves, the principal veins convex on the upper surface but somewhat depressed below the surface, the short inflorescence softly and densely rufoustomentose, and the calyx-lobes and broad connate bracteoles thin and somewhat dehcate. In specimens from Para and Suriname the pubescence of the inflorescence is somewhat darker red than in specimens from farther up the Amazon; the length of the inflorescence is greater (the axis may be as much as 3-5 cm long in fruiting specimens as against a few millimeters in Eugenia cupulata var macrophylla), and the calyx-lobes and bracteoles, though membranous, are somewhat less fragile. The differences between the two populations do not seem to be greater than those between varieties of a single species. For descriptions and iUustration of E. cupulata var. cupulata see Rec. Trav. Bot. Neerl. 39: 160-162. /. 4. 1942, and Fl. Suriname 3(2): 122. 1951.
