Description
Species Description - Amshoff cites a few specimens of this species from Suriname, but I have not seen any except the original ones collected in British Guiana by Schomburgk. The plant may be recognized by the relatively long and large leaves, often 3-7 cm wide, 10-20 cm long, 3 times as long as wide, with midvein broad and flat above; the inflorescence is reddish-pubescent but the buds glabrous, pyriform, 3.5 mm long; the long-turbinate hypanthium is prolonged 1.5 mm beyond the summit of the ovary, its margins at anthesis strongly revolute but not split; the calyx-lobes are 4 (or sometimes only 3), pubescent on the inner surface, notably short and broad, the larger ones nearly 1 mm long, more than 2 mm wide, separating at the edges from the margins of the hypanthium; the style is 7 mm long.
