Discussion:

Eugenia ferruginea Poir. in Lam., Encyc. Suppl. 3: 124. 1813.

Marlierea acuminata Berg, Linnaea 27: 13. 1855.

Eugeniopsis richardiana Berg, Linnaea 30: 665. 1861.

Krugia ferruginea (Poir.) Urb. in Krug & Urb., Bot. Jahrb. 19: 604. 1895.

The type of Eugenia ferruginea, in hb. Desfontaines (Fl), is an ample specimen with detached inflorescence showing the conspicuous bracts. The type of Eugeniopsis richardiana (P, Field Mus. neg. 36470), which I saw in Paris in 1965, is Richard 71, marked by Berg "exempl. originale." Berg cited in the protologue of Marlierea acuminata "Rob. Schomb., coll. no. 613; Rich. Schomburgk, coll. 907"; of these he said "v. in herb. Berol. et Vindob." A Schomburgk collection at K e w is numbered 613/907B, indicating that the original sheet at Berlin was numbered 907 (for an explanation of the numbering system used by the Schomburgk brothers, see the introduction to this paper). It is assumed that the Berlin sheet has been destroyed. The sheet of no. 613 at W , represented by Field Mus. neg. 31501, is therefore designated as lectotype. I should refer this, and a duplicate at P, as well as the K e w specimen cited above, to M . ferruginea.
