Monographs Details: Barbacenia
Authority: Maguire, Bassett. 1969. The botany of the Guayana Highland-part VIII. Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 18: 1-290.
Scientific Name:Barbacenia
Description:Genus Description - There is but a single species, Barbacenia celiac, at this time known from the Guayana Highland.^^ It occurs sparingly on Serra Tepequem, a Roraima sandstone plateau in northern Territorio Roraima, Brazil, near the Venezuelan frontier, and sparingly on an igneous mountain, Serra Sabang, somewhat to the southwest of Tepequem. The relationship of Barbacenia celiac clearly lies with the poorly known B. purpurea {Barbacenia purpurea Hooker, Bot. Mag. 54: 2777. 1827.), originally described from plants grown from seed obtained by the Rev. William Herbert from Brazilian sources and in 1827 grown under cultivation in England. A few collections purported to be B. purpurea have been made in the vicinity of Rio de Janeiro. A second near relative would be Barbacenia rogierii Hort., which, of "unknown origin," was grown in Belgium and England. N o preserved collections of it are known to me, but according to verbal commuunication to m e by Dr. Lyman Smith, B. rogierii has been collected by Prof. Castellanos at Marangatiba in Rio de Janeiro State. The plant is described horticulturally (Gard. Mag. Bot. [2]: 209, 210, pi. s n, Jul-Dec 1850) It perhaps represented a further cultivated form of B. purpurea.
