Monographs Details: Neurolepis mollis Swallen
Authority: Maguire, Bassett. 1969. The botany of the Guayana Highland-part VIII. Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 18: 1-290.

Type. Colombia. Departamento de Santander, mountains east of Las Vegas, alt 3000-3300 m , E. P Killip & Albert C. Smith 15830 (holotype U S ; isotype N Y ) .

Because the inflorescence of the type collection is immature, it is difficult to know just where to place this species. However, the combination of spreading panicle branches and puberulent sterile lemmas denotes a distinct species. A few herbarium collections from Colombia (Comisaria de Caqueta and Departamento de Norte de Santander) resemble the type but are themselves immature specimens and their assignment to Neurolepis mollis is questionable. They are from paramo forests at elevations of 2400-3300 m. The finest specimen I have seen is Steyermark 56512 (US) with a mature inflorescence, collected in dwarf cool forest in the state of Merida, Venezuela, at 2430-2895 m. A dwarfed example, but with normal mature spikelets, is Steyermark 57400 (US), collected in Venezuela on limestone outcrops of Paramo de Tama, near the Colombian-Venezuelan boundary at 3045-3475 m.
