Type. Colombia. (Paramo de) Tolima, cachilla de la divisadera, Nouvelle. Grenade, M . Justin Goudot in 1844 (US, fragments ex K and P ) .

Widely distributed throughout the mountains of Colombia in the shrub paramo, paramillo, and paramo zones at elevations of 1900-3600 m. Collections have been seen from the Departments of Antioquia, Bolivar, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Huila, Santander, and Valle.

The short obtuse glumes and long, delicate pedicels which far exceed the spikelet in length, and a short, but definite, internode between the glumes and first sterile lemma set this species apart from all others in the genus.
