    Laminis foliorum vulgo 4.0-4.5 x 6-8 cm; ligulati-auriculis 2.5-4.0 mm longis. Type. Summit, east escarpment of upper Cafion Grande Basin, 2000 m alt, C e n o de la Neblina, Territorio Amazonas, Venezuela, 13 Dec 1957, Bassett Maguire, John J. Wurdack & Celia K. Maguire 42379 (holotype N Y , isotype V E N ).

    The primary description of the species is drawn from the series of collections made on C e n o de la Neblina, and three of four cohections m a d e on C e n o Marahuaca. T h e following var. marahuacensis is based on the single collection of Steyermark et al. 124406, and represents a plant of large leaves and greatly conspicuous leaf base and ligulate auricles. Probably intermediates between the two elements exist.
