Abuta manauscnsis Krukoff & Barneby, Mem. N. Y. Bot. Gard. 20(2): 20. 1970.

the protologue of A. manauscnsis we compared the proposed new species with A. rufescens and A. splendida, mentioning A. candollei only in passing, as having much smaller staminate flowers. Subsequently we have dissected flowers from two further collections of A. candollei (Ducke 2162; Froes 26643) and find them, although still not as large as those of the type of A. manauscnsis (inner sepals 1.7-1.8 not ± 2.7 mm long), virtually identical in form. The androecium, formed of six free linear filaments which spread apart from their common point of origin and curve inwards distally toward the prominent bead-Uke anthers, is characteristic of all material studied. Among species of Abuta with velvety-tomentulose back of the leaf A. candollei is easily distinguished by the contrast in shape between the Unear outer and broad, thin-textured inner sepals.

The reduction of A. manauscnsis to A. candollei carries the range of the latter up the Amazon River into Amazonas, whence it has not been reported previously.
