  In his monograph of the genus Illicium, A. C. Smith (Sargentia 7: 1-224. 1947) described Illicium ekmanii and I. cubense as segregates from I. parvifloium Michx., which he considered endemic in Florida. I discovered I. ekmanii in the Dominican Republic for the first time; also while exploring the Cordillera Septentrional, I collected in two different areas a species differing from I. ekmanii. Comparing my own collections with plants from Florida, and studying the characteristics listed by A. C. Smith, I concluded that my collections from the northern part of the Dominican Republic represent I. parviflorum.
