    Species Description - Much like no. 3 [Aristida virgata Trin.], often taller, to 15 dm; sheaths glabrous to pilose (the hairs often appressed); lvs 2–4 mm wide; first glume with a lateral vein on one side only, scabrous on the keel, 8–14 mm; second glume 1-veined, subglabrous, 10–13 mm, usually slightly exceeding the first; lemma 7–10 mm, its central awn 1.5–4 cm, when dry reflexed to a nearly horizontal position; lateral awns 1–3 cm, ascending. Cumberland Plateau in Ky.; damp woods of the coastal plain from N.C. to Fla. and Tex. (A. affinis, misapplied)
