The linear calyx-lobes appear to distinguish this species from its related taxa, but I have not seen any material that can be identified as such from the Cumana region where this species was supposedly collected. Karsten stated that R. erythroneura is distinguished from R. eriantha and R. cumanensis by the linear calyx-lobes, and from R. americana by the leaf-shape, that of R. americana being lanceolate and pointed at both ends.
