Rondeletia rhynchospora H.B.K., Nov. Gen. & Sp. Pl. 3: 395. 1820. Rondeletia brevipes Benth., Pl. Hartw. 191. 1845. Type. Inter Mariquita et Honda, alt 200 hex., Colombia, Bonpland.

The description and photo of the type of R. brevipes Benth. shows the same type of short corolla-tube, short calyx-lobes, same type of pubescence, similar leaf-shape, short petioles, subglobose, short hypanthium, and reduced upper leaves of the inflorescence as are commonly encountered in specimens of R. pubescens, and the two taxa appear conspecific. Likewise, the description of R. rhynchospora H.B.K. also suggests that of R. pubescens H.B.K., the latter species having been collected by Humboldt and Bonpland from between Mariquita and Honda. Rondeletia rhynchospora was described from fruiting material only, collected “prope Honda,” Colombia. The specimen of Pennell 3558, here referred to R. pubescens, likewise was obtained from Honda. The type of pubescence described for the leaves of R. rhynchospora applies more properly to the leaves of R. pubescens than to that of any other species. The description of the seeds and fruits apply to the group of true Rondeletia species as here interpreted.
