    Steyermark reduced U. juncea Yahl to varietal rank under V. cornuta Michx. but the name he adopted is not validly published. Recent research (not yet completed) shows that the two taxa have different (though widely overlapping) distributions and different pollen. As truly intermediate forms are apparently infrequent I prefer for the present to treat U juncea as a distinct species. U. simplex Wright (U. sclerocarpa Wright, U. virgatula Barnh.) is certainly only a cleistogamous form of U. juncea.
