Type. British Guiana, Kaieteur Savanna, alt 330 m, Tutin 694 (holotype BM, isotypes K, U).

There is a considerable variation of corolla size and the specimen cited by Fernandez-Perez has violet rather than white or mauve corollas. The capsule appears to be unique in the genus; when ripe it splits down the abaxial face and the elongated placenta bends from the base and eventually projects through the split for its full length at an angle of about 90° to the axis of the fruit.
