Certainly the near relatives of this Bolivian species are in Tococa Sect. Anaphysca, the closest being the next-described species. Cogniaux suggested Miconia schlimii Triana as a relative; however, the complete lack of simple hairs, non-pruinose petals, and almost completely inferior 5-celled ovary neo-ate close affinity with T. erioneura.
