Description:Species Description - Arbor 15-50 alta dioica cortice striato cinerascenti, ramulis novellis, petiolis, inflorescentibus pube tenui conspersis; foliorum laminae trifoliolatae subsessiles lanceolatae 7-12 cm longae, 4.5-5.5 cm latae, basi angustatae, summo apice acu-tiusculae, integerrimae vel obsolete crenatae, chartaceae supra dense virides, subtus subopacae, nervo medio petioloque canaliculatis; flores male in spicis ramosis gracilibus a foliis ortis disposit, seniores distincte pedicellati, pedicellis filiformibus ad 6 mm longis; stamina 8-15; flores female ignoti; fructus capsulares, globosi vel depresso globosis, 1.2 cm alti, 1.5 cm diametro, laeves nec verrucosi; pedunculi longissimi penduli, 4-6 cm longi.

Distribution and Ecology - Known only from the eastern part of the State of Bolivar and adjacent Delta Amacuro. VENEZUELA. Bolivar: forest 3- 1 km SE of Los Patos, N of Rio Hacha and N of Rio Supamo, 30 km of El Manteco, alt 265 m, 9 Aug 1960, Steyermark 87073 (male NY) ; Sierra de Imataca, El Palmar, Hacienda de Magdalena, camino penetracion hacia Rio Grande, afluente del Orinoco, alt 300 m, 21 Feb 1959, Bemardi 7186 (sterile NY); Delta Amacuro: Este de Rio Grande, Este-Noreste de El Palmar, 17 Jan 1965, Berti 602 (fr. NY).

Discussion:

Type. South of Tumeremo, north of El Dorado, alt 220 m, Bolivar, 23 Jul 1960, Julian A. Steyermark 86568 (holotype fr. NY).

This new species is related to P. trifoliata, from which it differs by the smooth, not verrucose, globose and not angular, apiculate capsules. The capsules hang on long peduncles.
