  Genus Description - Spikelets 1-fld, strongly flattened, articulated above the glumes; glumes chartaceous, subequal, lance-linear, keeled, the first 1-veined, the second 3-veined; lemma chartaceous, keeled, shorter than the glumes, obscurely 3–5-veined, awnless, subtended by a short tuft of callus-hairs; palea about equaling the lemma; coarse, stiff, erect perennials from long rhizomes; ligules membranous; lf-blades flat at base, involute above; panicle contracted and spike-like. 2, the other on the coast of Europe and N. Afr.
