21. Schlegelia Miquel, Bot. Zeitung (Berlin) 2: 785. 1844. Type. S. lilacina Miq. =S. violacea (Aubl.) Griseb. Dermatocalyx Oerst., Vidensk. Meddel. Dansk Naturhist. Foren. Kjobenhavn 1855: 29. 1856. Type. D. parviflorus Oerst. =Schlegelia parviflora (Oerst.) Monachino. Schlegelia is intermediate between Bignoniaceae and Scrophulariaceae but has been tradidonally included with the latter (Gentry, 1974a). It is utterly distinctive in its simple leaves, lack of tendrils, small tubular flowers, and round baccate fruits. The genus ranges from Guatemala and Belize to Brazil, three species reaching upland Guayana.
