13. Martinella Baillon, Hist. PI. 10: 30. 1888. Type. M. martinii (DC.) Baill. ex K. Schum. = M. obovata (H.B.K.) Bur. & K. Schum. This genus is characterized by its large thin calyx, usually trifid tendrils, lack of interpetiolar glandular fields, a deep purple corolla adapted for hummingbird pollination, and a long extremely compressed fruit. It occurs from Belize to Brazil, a single species being known from the Guayana Highland.
