Hypolytrum pulchrum is variable especially in the shape and size of the spikes. The mature spikes vary from ovoid to cylindrical, and are arranged in an elongated raceme or in a congested head. Although H. pulchrum is one of the commonest species of South American Hypolytrum, it has not been documented from the Atlantic Coastal Brazilian states between Para and Guanabara.
